In Tibet – prior to 1959 – Sera Mey had an incentive fund that helped many poor monks in their difficult years of intensive study. However, due to Tibet’s occupation by P.R.C, this could not be continued in exile as the monastery itself remained financially poor for many years. In 2003, it was revived by the late His Eminence Kyabje Khensur Rinpoche Jetsun Ngawang Thekchok, a highly respected ex-abbot of Sera-Mey. Inspired by his insightful advice, Mr.Lin and his family from Taiwan had very generously sponsored the initial capital of the students’ incentive fund. However, the whole capital was lost due to the bankruptcy faced by local businessmen under whose care the capital was kept as loan in the hope of getting some interests. In 2008, Khensur Rinpoche again went to Taiwan and requested the help of Mr.Lin and Family. The family has been extremely helpful and the monastery remains forever indebted to them.
The aim of this fund is to provide financial assistance to students in order to encourage and enable them to study more earnestly. Based on the number of attendance at debates, students are given a complimentary pocket money. This gift to the students is helpful in meeting their basic requirements. From this fund, the monk scholars who teach at Sera Mey are also offered some small amount of money on a timely basis as a token of gratitude. Although the resident scholars who teach at Sera Mey have no salary like the professors of modern universities, they teach for the benefit of the Dharma and sentient beings.
