Following the Chinese occupation of Tibet, although many scholars and monks escaped into exile in India, many more were left behind in Tibet. Gen Yeshi Wangchuk, as he was fondly called with, was left behind and imprisoned for some time. In 1985 when the former Panchen Rinpoche revived the Lhasa Monlam Chenmo prayer festival in Tibet, Gen Yeshi Wangchuk was ranked the top Geshe at the Geshe Lharampa examination conducted during the prayer festival.
