The abbot is appointed by His Holiness the Dalai Lama from a list of prospective candidates proposed by a committee that compromises of representatives from all the internal sections of Sera Mey. The appointment is followed by an enthronement ceremony. Being the highest authority in the monastery, he maintains the overall responsibility for both the internal as well as the spiritual matters that concern the monastery, and presides over as the chief ritual master for all the important prayer sessions. The abbot has to give teachings at all the four seasonal sessions. His term usually lasts for about seven years. If he stays in his role for more than 10 years, then he would be given the title ‘Khenchen’. ( Click here to view the list of all Sera Mey's Successive Abbots )
